It appears that we may finally be getting a Mortal Kombat film that does the franchise justice! Now don't get me wrong, I love Paul W. S. Anderson's 1995 film, but that's simply because I grew up with it. The acting was hit or miss, the combat itself was mediocre at best, and the PG-13 rating definitely didn't allow for the bloody carnage that the Mortal Kombat franchise is known for.
Long story short, I have high hopes for this upcoming James Wan-produced film, which has now begun filming in Australia.
Writer Greg Russo followed up the announcement with a tweet that there are even more characters set to appear in the film that haven't been revealed yet. "I won’t overstuff this movie with characters," said Russo. "I’d rather hold on a character than do them disservice by jamming them in… that being said, there are more characters in this film that have yet to be announced…"
Thus far, Mortal Kombat's cast includes Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. Lewis Tan ("Wu Assassins") will play a currently unknown leading character. Kung Lao maybe?
Simon McQuoid will direct from a script by Russo with the latter promising an "R" rated film complete with fatalities and graphic violence!
Although plot details are currently under wraps, we do know that Mortal Kombat will be released on March 5th, 2021.
