[Trailer] Kayako Returns With Another Deadly Curse In 'The Grudge' Reboot

The Grudge Nicolas Pesce Trailer

At the turn of the new millennium, J-horror was all the rage, and so were the Americanized remakes... Of course, the American iterations never really lived up to the quality of their Japanese counterparts, with the first Ring film being the only decent exception.

Well, early next year, The Grudge franchise is receiving another chance at redemption with Nicolas Pesce's new take on the horror classic, Ju-On that is (the Sarah Michele Gellar flicks were awful).

Today, Sony has released the first trailer for the film, which follows the events after a young mother murders her family in her own house, a single mother and detective tries to investigate and solve the case. Later, she discovers the house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.

There's no sign of Toshio and his cat sounds here (thank the horror gods), but Kayako is back with her long black hair.

The Grudge stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy), Lin Shaye (Insidious), Demian Bichir (The Nun), John Cho ("The Exorcist"), Betty Gilpin ("Glow"), Jacki Weaver and Frankie Faison.

With a screenplay by Pesce and Jeff Buhler, The Grudge is based on the film Ju-On: The Grudge, written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. The film is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise and is executive produced by Nathan Kahane, Erin Westerman, Brady Fujikawa, Andrew Pfeffer, Roy Lee, Doug Davison, John Powers Middleton and Schuyler Weiss.

The R-rated remake hits theaters on January 3rd, 2020.
