[Trailer] Egon's Legacy Lives On Through His Grandkids In 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'

Ghostbusters Afterlife Trailer

"Everything happens for a reason."

The official trailer for Jason Reitman‘s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was unleashed early this morning, confirming that the film will pick up the original film franchise's storyline 35 years later, rather than taking the reboot route, which obviously didn't work out too well for the 2016 film. In other words, it's clear that Afterlife isn't a rehash of the first two movies.

The movie features Carrie Coon as the daughter of the late Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), with Finn Wolfhard ("Stranger Things", IT) and Mckenna Grace ("The Haunting of Hill House") as Egon's grandchildren, who ultimately inherit his legacy, Ecto-1 included, and become the next generation of Ghostbusters.

Paul Rudd also has a prominent part in the film, playing a teacher of sorts, with Vanity Fair stating that he "was a kid when the Manhattan Crossrip occurred" in the original 1984 film. And even though they don't appear in the trailer, it has been confirmed that original cast members from the classic films are expected to return, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts.

The trailer also gives us a look at Ecto-1 in action and teases the presence of Terror Dogs and Slimer-esque apparitions.

The film's official synopsis reads: "When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind."

Oliver Cooper, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim will also star in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan.

Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 director and Jason's father, Ivan Reitman, is producing the new film.

The Ghostbusters will return to theaters on July 10th, 2020.
