Described as a spiritual descendant of the original "Penny Dreadful" story, "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels" abandons Victorian-era London for 1930s Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension, and Showtime has now unleashed the official teaser trailer.
In the series, "When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city's first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart."
From original creator John Logan, "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels" stars Natalie Dormer, Nathan Lane, Daniel Zovatto, Lorenza Izzo, Adriana Barraza, Kerry Bishé and Lin Shaye.
Logan recently told EW that the new series "is about the social and personal cost that goes into making a great modern metropolis and how the various forces at play in 1938 are the very forces that are playing now. One hundred years before our show, Los Angeles was Mexico. I wanted to tell a story about a Latino family under pressure because of all the forces at play—not only in freeway building but also in crime, law enforcement, and immigration policy."
The series will premiere on Sunday, April 26th at 10/9c only on Showtime.
