Animated Prequel Series "Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai" To Premiere In 2021

Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai 2021 Premiere

Announced last year, WarnerMedia is currently developing a Gremlins animated prequel series for the streaming service HBO MAX, titled "Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai," and today we've received and update on when we can expect it to premiere. Unfortunately, it won't be this calendar year...

In a conversation with Collider, co-executive producer Brendan Hay revealed that the series is currently on track for premiere sometime in 2021.

"Getting to do a horror and horror comedy aimed at slightly older kids is a very different beast [from Netflix’s 'Harvey Girls Forever!'] but still been a lot of fun and yeah, so that’ll come out sometime in 2021," said Hay.

Back in July, we learned that the half-hour series had received a 10-episode order.

Set in 1920s Shanghai, the series will tell the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.

"Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins."

The series will be written by Tze Chun and executive produced by Darryl Frank ("The Americans", "Animaniacs", "Amazing Stories"), Justin Falvey ("The Americans", "Animaniacs", "Amazing Stories") and Sam Register ("Teen Titans Go!") with Chun and Hay ("Dawn of the Croods", "Robot Chicken", "Harvey Girls Forever") serving as co-executive producers. Dan Krall (Coraline, Scooby-Doo!) will serve as supervising producer.

Amblin produces in association with Warner Bros. Animation.
