Today marks legendary filmmaker David Lynch's 74th birthday, and to celebrate the occasion, Netflix has surprise dropped the Lynch directed and starring What Did Jack Do?, a 17-minute black and white short film where Lynch plays a detective interrogating a capuchin monkey (the titular Jack) who is being questioned about possibly committing a murder.

"A detective investigates a monkey who is suspected of murder" is the film's simple logline, and that's basically all you need to know. Of course, the monkey doesn't just sit in silence as Lynch asls questions, it responds in a human-like voice. It's adorable and bizarre all at once, and the noir aesthetic coupled with the train station setting further adds to the overall quirkiness. You've just gotta see it to believe it!

Even weirder, Jack breaks out into song at one point! What Did Jack Do? also features several Lynch hallmarks, such as rabbits, black coffee, and cigarettes.

It's also worth noting that Lynch was spotted at the Netflix offices back in 2018, so this may not be the last we see of Netflix and Lynch working together.
