'Meg'-Style 'Anaconda' Reboot In The Works At Columbia Pictures

Anaconda Reboot Columbia Pictures

Anaconda, the 1997 hit creature feature, is getting the reboot treatment!

Three direct-to-home sequels and a Lake Placid crossover later, it appears that the franchise might actually be headed back in the right direction, as THR reports that Sony's Columbia Pictures is developing an all-new and all-modern take on the Luis Llosa-directed film.

The site also notes that the studio "wants to take a Meg-style approach to the reboot." Personally, I enjoyed the dumb fun that was The Meg and think the style will translate well to the Anaconda franchise. Like I mentioned above, if anything, it's a step in the right direction for a franchise that hasn't been good since it's second entry, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid.

Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tomb Raider) has been hired to write the script. No other names have been attached at this time.

And while we're on the topic of giant snakes, I'd like to bring up Constantin Film's Titanoboa-based film, which was announced last year and, last we heard, was slated to shoot in 2020. Let's hope that's still the case!

The original film's ensemble cast included Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde and Owen Wilson.

The film focuses on a documentary film crew in the Amazon rainforest that is captured by a snake hunter who is hunting down a giant, legendary green anaconda.
