One of, if not the best home video distributors of cult films, Severin Films, has launched a new ongoing series entitled The Severin Cellar, wherein they'll be inviting beloved giants from the world of cult cinema down into "the hitherto off-limits dank, dark recesses of the remote company shack to select and wax rhapsodic about their most treasured psychotronic transmissions from the Severin Films archives."
Think Criterion Closet, only bloodier, sleazier and to some, better...
The inaugural episode features outsider filmmaking legend Richard Stanley, hot on the heels of the release of his Nicolas Cage-starring, H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space, which opened this past weekend to big box office and critical acclaim.
Severin has a long, storied history with Stanley, as company president David Gregory directed the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's The Island of Dr. Moreau and is a co-producer on Color Out of Space. Severin also distributes Stanley's mind warping documentary The Otherworld and the now out of print special edition of his sci-fi/horror hit Hardware. Severin also produced the horror anthology feature The Theatre Bizarre, which marked the director's return to narrative filmmaking after a more than two decade hiatus.
Stanley was quite possibly the perfect candidate for the first episode, as he's utterly charming and has interesting stories to go with each film. If this episode is any indication, we're in for a real treat with The Severin Cellar!
