Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) is producing a new take on Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for Legendary, and Variety reports that the studio has closed a deal for Ryan and Andy Tohill (The Dig) to direct the reboot of the classic 1974 film.
"The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want," Alvarez said in a statement. "It's violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever."
The film will be written by Chris Thomas Devlin with Alvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues producing for Bad Hombre banner through their overall deal with Legendary.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tiny bit worried about this reboot, regardless of Fede Alvarez's involvement. Hooper's film has already been remade once, and while I've enjoyed practically every entry in the franchise, it just feels like they're treading well-worn ground here.
In the original film, two siblings and three of their friends en route to visit their grandfather's grave in Texas end up falling victim to a family of cannibalistic psychopaths and must survive the terrors of Leatherface and his family.
The film went on to spawn three sequels, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, with the latter of the bunch starring Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger. Platinum Dunes rebooted the franchise in 2003 and followed that film up with the 2006 prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. 2013 saw the release of Texas Chainsaw 3D and another prequel, titled Leatherface, was released in 2017.
The site notes that Legendary sees the film as an opportunity to relaunch the franchise all over again.
