Often considered the Holy Grail of EuroHorror cinema, Amando de Ossorio "Blind Dead" series began in 1972 with Tombs of the Blind Dead and went on to spawn three official sequels: Return of the Blind Dead (1973), The Ghost Galleon (1974) and Night of the Seagulls (1975), and we've now learned that Synapse Films will be bringing the first film in the series to Blu-ray (and DVD) sometime in 2020!
In a small update on the release, Synapse revealed they're currently working on a new high-definition restoration for the Special Edition Blu-ray, which will include both the uncut and U.S. versions of the film.
The company also uploaded a new trailer for the film, which can be viewed below.
Back in 2005, Blue Underground released The Blind Dead Collection, a DVD box set that was housed in a neat coffin-shaped packaging. Given the box set is long out of print and rather pricey, I'd really love to see Synapse do something cool with the series, but on Blu-ray this time around. However, Scream Factory brought Night of the Seagulls to Blu-ray a few years ago, so it seems rights to the series may be all over the place.
In Tombs of the Blind Dead, "In the 13th century there existed a legion of evil knights known as the Templars, who quested for eternal life by drinking human blood and committing sacrifices. Executed for their unholy deeds, the Templars bodies were left out for the crows to peck out their eyes. Now, in modern day Portugal, a group of people stumble on the Templars abandoned monastery, reviving their rotting corpses to terrorize the land."
On another note, what the hell is going on with that new film Curse of the Blind Dead. It was supposed to release in 2019!
