Takashi Miike's 'Sukiyaki Western Django' Being Released On Collector's Edition Blu-ray

Sukiyaki Western Django Blu-ray MVD Takashi Miike

Back in 2007, famed Japanese auteur Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) co-wrote and directed a stylized postmodern remake of Sergio Corbucci's 1966 Spaghetti Western classic, Django, and while it may not be a genre we usually cover here on Crypt Teaze, Sukiyaki Western Django does feature a handful of our favorite things in the cinematic world, Takashi Miike's flair (of course), Quentin Tarantino, and plenty of bloody mayhem.

The film was released on Blu-ray back in 2008 and has since gone out of print. Fortunately, we've now learned the folks at MVD Visual will be re-releasing it on June 16th as a part of their Marquee Collection! Even better, the Blu-ray will feature the extended cut of the film!

In Sukiyaki Western Django, "Two clans, Genji, the white clan led by Yoshitsune, and Heike, the red clan led by Kiyomori, battle for a legendary treasure hidden in a desolate mountain town. One day, a lone gunman, burdened with deep emotional scars but blessed with incredible shooting skills, drifts into town. Two clans try to woo the lone gunman to their sides, but he has ulterior motives. Dirty tricks, betrayal, desire and love collide as the situation erupts into a final, explosive showdown."

Special Features:

  • Sukiyaki Western Django : Extended Cut (SD, 159:57, with Optional Japanese Subtitles)

  • Making of Featurette (SD, 52:37, In Japanese with English Subtitles

It's worth noting that Tarantino's role is a very small one, but it's great to see him in the film nonetheless! Hideaki Itô (Memoirs of a Murderer, Lesson of the Evil) and Kôichi Satô (When the Last Sword is Drawn) also star. Miike co-wrote the film with Masa Nakamura (First Love).
