A Japanese Remake of Vincenzo Natali's 'Cube' Is Coming This October

Japanese film producer and distributor Shochiku recently announced the release of their upcoming Cube remake.

As 90s kids may remember, Vincenzo Natali’s film Cube followed a group of test subjects trapped within a maze-like cube filled with dozens of rooms, each containing death traps that can only be avoided by finding the correct pathway out.

Cube hits theaters October 22nd in Japan, with distribution in other countries yet to be announced.

The Japanese remake stars Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, Tashiro Hikaru, Saito Takumi, Yoshida Kotaro and the single-named Anne as the six potential victims who must come band together to survive the sadistic traps.

Shimizu Yasuhiko, who previously directed 2019’s Vice, will helm the project. The remake was shot in October and November of 2020.

Speaking to Variety, Shimizu stated:

“No one can resist the powerful system of the Cube. In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What lurks in the abyss of the self – hope or despair? You will soon be in the Cube with us. In fact, you may already be in it.”
