He’s done it again. Daniel Graves, the wizard behind the industrial pop of Aesthetic Perfection, has released the third and final song to come from his Cellar Sessions project. Using the most basic of production and arrangement, and recording in his home in Austria, Graves has previously covered Orville Peck’s “Dead of Night” and Lana Del Rey’s “Gods and Monsters,” and for his last Cellar Session, he’s got the most ambitious cover he’s done yet.
For this installment, Graves chose “when the party’s over” by Billie Eilish, from the upstart Eilish’s album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? As Graves himself confessed on his social media, “This last session was the most difficult of all. The song spans two octaves in a key that was never intended for a male voice. However, despite the challenges it was a very rewarding experience. I hope you like it.”
Those who have heard songs like “Supernatural” should not be surprised at Graves’ vocal range, but here, he hits notes that are difficult for any range, much less for a male vocalist. Give the man credit, he pushed himself on this one, and the result is one of the strongest covers we’ve heard this year.
Perhaps the upcoming take on Ramones’ “Pet Sematary” on October 1st will give any of the Cellar Sessions a run for their money? Time will tell.
In the meantime, watch Aesthetic Perfection’s spellbinding take on “when the party’s over” below:
