Earlier this summer, it was announced that New Republic Pictures had secured the rights to author Grady Hendrix’s debut novel, the haunted horror-comedy Horrorstör. This is one of several Hendrix novels that are in development for television or film, with his most recent work, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires being picked up by Amazon before the book was released, as well as My Best Friend’s Exorcism being snagged by Endeavor Content, with Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon tapped to produce.
As first reported by Deadline, we now know that, much in the same way that his latest book’s rights were secured before its release, Hendrix’s next work, The Final Girl Support Group, has been picked up by Annapurna Pictures. The novel, due out on July 13th, 2021 via Berkley, a division of Penguin Random House, serves as a subversion of the slasher genre we all know and love, as well as a critique of the sensationalism behind true crime.
The adaptation will be headed up by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, co-creators of the ABC series The Fix. Craft and Fain also wrote for series such as Women’s Murder Club, The Shield, and Joss Whedon’s Angel. Hendrix himself will serve as executive producer along with Annapurna’s own Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Patrick Chu, as well as Adam Goldworm of Aperture Entertainment.
