We've been hearing rumblings in recent years that George Miller was developing a Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff centering on the genesis of Imperator Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron in Miller’s Oscar-winning 2015 movie.
The Hollywood Reporter brings quite a massive update on the film today, reporting that Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split, The New Mutants) will be taking on the titular role in the film, which is simply titled Furiosa.
Chris Hemsworth (Thor franchise, The Avengers franchise) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman, Aquaman) will also star. Although, it's currently unclear who they will be playing.
Miller will direct, co-write and produce Furiosa with longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell and their Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner.
One of the greatest films of our generation, Mad Max: Fury Road grossed a whopping $375.2 million at the worldwide box office, and went on to win six, yes SIX, fucking Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.
Now, if I'm being totally honest, this spinoff isn't really of much interest to me. I personally want to see a continuation of the Fury Road storyline with Tom Hardy remaining in the role of Max Rockatansky. Supposedly, Miller is still intending on creating said film(s), but it's been quite a long time since any new details have emerged.
