Just because the status of Fear Factory is as up in the air as, well, anything else in this current timeline, does not mean its individual members are keeping to themselves. Singer Burton C. Bell appeared on the Brexit Edition of Pitchshifter’s “Un-United Kingdom” earlier this year, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the song, and now, his second band Ascension of the Watchers has announced their first album in over a decade, Apocrypha.
Ascension of the Watchers is the result of the team of Burton C. Bell and John Bechdel (Ministry, Nukes et al), with Welsh drummer/programmer Jayce Lewis joining the duo for the new album. Serving as Apocrypha’s first single is “Ghost Heart,” a haunting piece of gothic rock with Bell’s wide clean vocal range prominently on display. It is a rock-driven approach, so fans of Fear Factory’s more metallic styles may be caught off-guard if they’re unfamiliar with Ascension of the Watchers, but “Ghost Heart” is worth a listen.
The video for said song is also very much worth a viewing, as it is a surrealist dreamscape crafted by Victor Hugo-Borge, a Brazilian animator known for his work on Historietas Assombradas and other animated features. The video is a creepy, pallid story with striking visuals and diminutive characters.
Apocrypha will be released on October 9th via Dissonance Productions, and can be pre-ordered here.
