Hungarian dark synthpop duo Black Nail Cabaret gave us one hell of a record with Gods Verging on Sanity earlier this year, with new label Dependent Records giving singer Emese Arvai-Illes and keyboardist Krisztian Arvai a wider platform for their music. While the entire album is, as I said in my review, “a major victory,” the landslide win of a track was by far “My Casual God,” with its Depeche Mode nods and gothic composition, without going too serious or too drab for its own good. It’s a stirring synthpop masterstroke, and it’s been stuck in my head since the first listen.
Now, the band has released a music video for the track, directed by Tamas Mesmer. The takes are long, the colors are absent, and the motion slow. This is not a fast-moving affair, much like the song itself, with a calculated ocular showcase being the name of the game. The close-ups on Emese’s performance make this, showing her delivery as deliberate and slightly understated, a testament to the “less is more” mentality that comes through in the music.
Not too busy, not too shiny, this video is an excellent companion to one of the best dark pop tracks of 2020.
