Daniel Kaluuya has had an incredible 2021 thus far, as his role as Chairman Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah earned him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. He’s earned a number of nominations for this role that is climbing to match those of his breakout role as Chris in Jordan Peele’s phenomenal social horror Get Out, and most recently, Kaluuya enjoyed his first guest host spot on the iconic Saturday Night Live.
In his opening monologue, Kaluuya riffed on British racism vs. American racism, his accent, and the Zoom call flub during the Golden Globes, in which his microphone was muted during his acceptance speech for the aforementioned Supporting Actor award. He then jokes about the surreal nature of the flub, likening it to being in the Sunken Place as his character Chris experienced in Get Out.
Kaluuya went on to perform in skits about the COVID-19 vaccines, game night with the parents, and awkward small talk in the dog park, among other comical bits. St. Vincent was the musical guest, offering up a couple of stirring performances throughout the show.
