Filmmaker David Gordon Green, who recently brought Michael Myers back to the big screen and is currently involved in the Hellraiser franchise's first-ever television series, is reportedly getting ready to board yet another popular horror franchise.
As reported by Observer, Green is in talks to direct a sequel to William Friedkin's The Exorcist for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.
Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson will produce the new film.
As for Friedkin, his involvement is highly unlikely, as he recently tweeted that "there’s not enough money or motivation in the world" to entice him into working on "a new version of The Exorcist."
Plot and casting details for the new film are currently unknown, but with Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Laurie Strode for Blumhouse's Halloween films, it will be interesting to see if Linda Blair will reprise the role of Regan MacNeil. We also wonder if Blumhouse will take the same approach for the new Exorcist film as they did with their Halloween trilogy, retconning the rest of the franchise entries for a direct sequel to the original film. Only time will tell.
The original film follows a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her.
Released in 1973, The Exorcist earned $193 million globally and retained the title of the highest-grossing, R-rated horror movie of all time for over four decades, until it was topped by 2017's It. The film spawned three sequels and a prequel, as well as a television series, which was cancelled by Fox after just two seasons.
We'll be sure to keep CryptTeaze readers updated on this project as details are revealed.
