After losing out on their summer tour with Gojira and Poppy till next year, Deftones shifted their attention to new music. After eagle-eyed fans spotted billboards teasing the potential new album from the nu metal stalwarts, the band confirmed all of the rumors, releasing the lead single and title track of their new album Ohms, which is set to be released on September 25th via Warner Records.
In an interview with singer Chino Moreno for Kerrang!, the meaning of the album title is revealed: “It’s that balance and polarity of things. I’ve always described our band as having that yin and yang. As people, the music we make, and the lyrics that I write, there’s always this juxtaposition and that’s the beauty of what we’ve created.”
The title track is a heavy, space-out affair, with riffs aplenty from guitarist Stephen Carpenter. The layers piled on this art-metal piece are remarkable, even by Deftones standards, ensuring that the first taste of the band’s work since 2016’s incredible album Gore stands out, and gives the metal world a little bit of hope for the rest of this year’s major releases.
