With its creative use of sound design and the mystery of vulnerability, the first Don’t Breathe ended up a massive success, making over $150 million on a relatively small $10 million budget. Fede Alvarez, known best for his gloriously gory 2013 remake Evil Dead, directed and co-wrote the film alongside Rodo Sayagues, with Stephen Lang playing the troubled and disturbed Blind Man. Longtime co-conspirators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert produced the stunning thriller, which some have argued was a response to the criticism of too much gore in the Evil Dead remake. As such, the focus was on suspense and tension, though there’s plenty of on-screen violence for the gorehounds among us to enjoy.
Without spoiling the ending of the first film, the door was open for a sequel, and pandemic be damned, the film has wrapped its principal photography, as revealed in a tweet by Lang:
Screen Gems has set a tentative release date for Don’t Breathe 2, eyeing August 13, 2021 for the continuation of The Blind Man’s disturbing tale. Fede Alvarez will once again co-write the film, though he has bequeathed directorial duties to Sayagues. The two’s working relationship dates back to Alvarez’s 2009 film Panic Attack! Returning to the franchise will be Sam Raimi as a producer.
The original film won a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Stephen Lang’s performance, as well as a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. Can Alvarez and Co. repeat their prior success?
