Dread Presents Release Trailer for Wrestling Doc 'Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro'

Earlier this week, my third installment of In Defense of Cinematic Wrestling covered Lucha Underground. And earlier this year, Vampiro, the show’s color commentator and decorated professional wrestler, announced that said federation had closed its doors, with most of its talent going to the two major American promotions. That said, Vampiro himself, without having signed to either company, has a new documentary about his life and career coming courtesy of Dread Presents, the horror wing of Epic Pictures.

The documentary is titled Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro. Vampiro, real name Ian Hodgkinson, is the current director of talent for Lucha Libre AAA, Mexico’s premier wrestling league. He has held championships in AAA, WCW, Puerto Rico’s World Wrestling Council, and JCW. Trained by legendary deathmatch wrestler and fork enthusiast Abdullah The Butcher, his decade has spanned over three decades, but there is a lot more to the man behind the facepaint and dreadlocks.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

A Lucha Libre legend, Hodgkinson tells the astonishing story about his meteoric rise to fame in the 90’s and how it almost killed him. Yet none of that was as back-breaking as his current life – working behind-the-scenes as the Director of Talent for Lucha Libre AAA in Mexico City and Lucha Underground in Los Angeles, while simultaneously raising his teenage daughter Dasha in remote Northern Canada as a single parent.

Directed by Michael Paszt, the film debuted at Fantastic Fest last year to much acclaim. Nail in the Coffin is due out for a limited theatrical release on Friday, September 4th, and will be available on VOD platforms the following Tuesday, September 8th.
