The double life of Stephen King and his nom de plume Richard Bachman led to some interesting tales in the Eighties, including stories such as the futuristic game-show tale that is The Running Man. The 1987 film adaptation starred Arnold Schwarzenegger running the gauntlet at the behest of the twisted host, Family Feud’s own Richard Dawson, though it strayed significantly from the source material.
Enter Edgar Wright, director of modern classics like Shaun of the Dead (and the rest of the Cornetto trilogy, for that matter) and Baby Driver, who Deadline first reported will direct a new adaptation of the 1982 novel, which he will co-write with Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 21 Jump Street). Paramount Pictures will distribute the film, and Simon Kinberg will produce under his Genre Films banner.
Edgar Wright has started off 2021 on a good foot, with his music documentary The Sparks Brothers receiving rave reviews. Later this year, his London-based horror Last Night in Soho is set to hit theaters, and just in time for Halloween with an October 22nd release date at time of printing. Wright is also working on a sequel to Baby Driver at this time, though nothing further has been formally announced.
