Is it a Halloween movie? Is it a Christmas movie? Is it both simultaneously? Is it a Thanksgiving movie? Regardless of how you may have answered the above posed questions, Tim Burton’s 1993 classic The Nightmare Before Christmas launched hundreds of souls into their love of the macabre, from the kitschy animation to the outstanding score and soundtrack composed by the legendary Danny Elfman, to the iconic couple of Jack Skellington and Sally. For many, it was a gateway drug into goth culture, and for others it is their only real brush with the darkness within them.
To ring in this holiday-heavy part of the year, Epica singer Simone Simons partnered with her husband Oliver Palotai, who also plays in Kamelot, Sons of Seasons, and the touring band for Doro Pesch, to cover the classic “This is Halloween,” one of the first songs heard in the film. Simons and Palotai make for an excellent vocal pairing, trading off the voices of the Halloween Town denizens, and Palotai’s orchestration is faithful to the original version. In so many words, if you’re sick of the Marilyn Manson version of this song, there’s a new version, and it’s as whimsical as anything you’ve heard this season.
