If there’s ever anyone who needs no introduction, it’s Gary Numan. From the early days of tracks like “Cars” and “Are Friends Electric” to the more recent “My Name Is Ruin”, he’s been a driving force in dark electronic music for 40 years by now. (As a side note, also one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen -- catch one if you get a chance). However in the face of Pandemia he’s been rather quiet. Until now.
“Intruder”, the lead single off the newest Numan album of the same name, picks up where Savage (Songs From A Broken World), leaves off: Things are really really messed up. The lyrical content is the bleak observations we’ve seen in the last few releases and the vocal prowess we’ve come to expect over the years. The backing music doesn’t shy away from the more industrial direction of recent years either -- there’s heavy beats that are going to light up a dancefloor, the sounds of a broken future’s machinery droning on, and a remarkably simple yet effective synthline. As always Numan is a master of creating his own world and plunging us directly into it.
The accompanying video is also stunning with its simplicity. Featuring Numan in his post-apocalyptic gear, with a rotating camera and single light around him, you can feel the isolation of this world and feel his character’s desperation. Just as “My Name Is Ruin” did for Savage, we have our stage set for where the story will take us from here.
I, for one, can’t wait to hear the next chapter.
