Gemini Syndrome Get Deeply Philosophical With New Song "IDK"

Gemini Syndrome is a band that I find particularly difficult to compare to any other artist. While the label of alternative metal fits, the sonic output of this LA-based five-piece can range from soaring melodies to gravelly screams, sometimes within the same track. If I were forced to pick a “sounds like,” I would have to go with Lost and Found or The New Game-era Mudvayne, but without Ryan Martinie’s insane bass guitar work. They sound enough like a modern radio hard rock band, but it’s only so easy to compare them to any of their contemporaries.

Now, over a decade after their formation, the band is set on closing their album trilogy, the first two parts being 2013’s Lux and 2016’s Memento Mori. Last month saw the single “Reintegration” released, and this week, the band has let loose another energetic hard rock track in “IDK.”

Says singer Aaron Nordstrom about the song’s title: "IDK plays with the double entendre, 'I decay' and 'IDK' (I don't know) to illustrate the Voltaire quote, 'The more I read, the more I acquire, the more certain I am that I know nothing.'"

Drummer Brian Steele Medina adds: "IDK opens the door to the idea that we have to be willing to discard our old ideas and identity to give space for new ideas to grow and allow a more evolved identity to flourish. The last thing we want to do is to get stuck in old patterns of thought and behavior. This is an essential principal as we progress through the various degrees of the initiatory traditions."

Brian Cox, whose previous work includes Starset and Bring Me the Horizon, directed the music video for “IDK,” which plays with the ideas laid out by Medina in so many ways, from the crooner microphone and slicked-back hair donned by Nordstrom, as well as the aesthetic of the backdrops, which evoke memories of old Windows Media Player visualizers.

On the subject of new ideas growing, the upcoming album is complete, having been finished in 2019 with producer Matt Good. No title or release date for the album has been formally released at this time, though it appears it will be released via Another Century, a division of Century Media Records. This will be their second Another Century release, after the aforementioned Memento Mori.

“IDK” drops on all streaming platforms on Friday, January 22nd. Save/add it here.
