Fresh off of his Oscar wins for The Shape of Water, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro began production on Nightmare Alley, an adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel of the same name, which just wrapped principal photography this month, as announced by Searchlight Pictures on Twitter.
In the announcement video, del Toro himself reveals that the film will be released in December 2021.
In Nightmare Alley, an ambitious young carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is.
The carnival cast includes carnival worker Molly (Rooney Mara), head barker Clem (Willem Dafoe), and Ron Perlman as Bruno the Strongman. Richard Jenkins is part of the high society crowd as wealthy industrialist Ezra Grindle.
The film also stars Toni Collette (Knives Out, Hereditary), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, The Visitor) and David Strathairn (Lincoln, Good Night and Good Luck).
Del Toro directed and co-wrote the film with Kim Morgan (The Forbidden Room). Nightmare Alley is being produced by del Toro and J. Miles Dale (Antlers, The Shape of Water).
