Velma, an original take on one of the famous Scooby-Doo characters, will premiere on HBO Max later this year.
Although adult themes and cursing have always been a major “Scooby-Don’t” in the children’s series, HBO’s 10-episode series will show viewers a side of the turtleneck-wearing nerd we’ve never seen before.
Voiced by Mindy Kaling (“The Office”), Velma will finally be given the spotlight as the focus shifts to her personal life and the ups-and-downs outside of solving mysteries.
It’s been speculated the series will also touch on the title character’s sexuality, which has somehow been an ongoing question among fans of the franchise. I’m not sure that’s a case worthy of The Mystery Machine, but hey, it’s new material to explore. After all, DC’s animated series Harley Quinn dealt with the topic rather well in its second season, and representation is important.
Kaling also executive-produced Velma, and she’ll be joined behind the scenes by fellow “The Office” alumni Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein.
HBO has also recently announced a two-season order for a Clone High reboot, so this is either a nostaligia-based cash grab or a genius resurgence of older properties. We shall see.
