From the sprawling lands of Middle Earth to the cramped corridors of the USCSS Nostromo, Sir Ian Holm gave us some of the most memorable performances in cinematic history, and we're deeply saddened to learn that he has passed away in London at the age of 88.
The Guardian reports that the veteran British actor's death was due to a Parkinson's-related illness, and Holm's agent released an official statement confirming the news.
"It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely."
If you take a look at Holm's IMDb page, you'll see that the cherished actor accrued well over 100 acting credits throughout his career. Most will recognize him for his memorable role as Ash the villainous android in Ridley Scott's Alien and his performance as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, a character that he would reprise in The Hobbit trilogy.
Early in his career, Holm was a mainstay at the Royal Shakespeare Company and went on to win a BAFTA and was Oscar-nominated for his role as coach Sam Mussabini in 1981's Chariots of Fire. Holm’s other notable performances include Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits, From Hell,The Fifth Element, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch and eXistenZ. He was knighted Sir Ian Holm back in 1998 for his services to drama.
