Ice Nine Kills Put Their Sick Spin on Elvis Classic "Can't Help Falling In Love"

Why did no one tell me that Punk Goes Oldies was a thing?! Y’all are fired.

Ice Nine Kills have pulled out in front of the crowd as the kings of theatrical metal, particularly after the release of 2018’s The Silver Scream. The Final Cut release (review) added a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” which was… well, it was a cover.

They didn’t slow down in 2020 whatsoever, as last year, the band parodied Fountains of Wayne’s “Stacy’s Mom,” their version called “Jason’s Mom,” a tribute to the recent passing of Fountains of Wayne’s singer Adam Schlesinger and Pamela Voorhees herself, the late Betsy Palmer. This fall, the band released their first live releases in Undead and Unplugged: Live from the Overlook Hotel and I Heard They Kill LIVE!

And by this point, if you haven’t picked up on the fact that I9K aren’t slowing down, well, you’re not even trying.

For Valentine’s Day, the band has released a cover of Elvis Presley’s wooing classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and this one surprised me. Lead singer Spencer Charnas really shows off his vocal chops here (not that they’ve ever really been called into question), and while it would be easy for this metalcore band to take this song in that direction, they keep things oddly faithful.

That doesn’t mean that the music video, directed by Myles Erfurth, is any less horrific, from Charnas’ smoked-out eyes and contacts to the story playing out, as a man (also played by Charnas) flips through a scrapbook and sees snippets of the previous music videos from The Silver Screen. He slowly is driven to insanity with each new memory, before going fully out of his mind. And if that isn’t evidence enough that love can drive one to insanity, well, what will be?
