In terms of the last decade or so, “Souls-like” appears to be the new “Metroidvania” during discussions about video games. Ever since From Software forced players to “git gud” with their critically-acclaimed Dark Souls trilogy, developers high and low have tried to capture the lightning in the bottle that was the harrowing difficulty of those games. As luck would have it, though, the Souls-like subgenre is not limited to 3D games, as the new 2.5D isometric game Morbid: The Seven Acolytes looks to pixelate the punishment.
Boasting Lovecraftian horrors and Cronenbergian gore, M:TSA is a horrorpunk action RPG which looks and feels like Bloodborne in retro form. The aesthetic is gruesome and bleak, with the action brutal throughout. Exploring the haunting world of Mornia, players can wield guns, swords, and more weaponry to tear the monsters apart en route to meeting any of the titular Acolytes and wrest the power from their hands, tendrils, or other assorted appendages.
Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Still Running and Merge Games. See the full launch trailer below.
