On Wednesday, the news broke that Laurie Strode herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, was joining the cast of Splat Pack darling Eli Roth’s film adaptation of Borderlands. She joins Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart among the announced cast, but now, a comedic actor is joining those ranks in an equally comedic role.
Jack Black has been announced as the voice of the fast-talking wiseass robot Claptrap (or CL4P-TP, if you prefer). While the character was initially met with derision from fans for his annoying, overbearing goofiness, Claptrap did win the Spike Video Game Award for Best New Character once upon a time. He also was the subject of the first game’s Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution DLC, and a playable character in The Pre-Sequel.
In a statement to Variety, Eli Roth said:
“I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth. Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane called the decision to cast Black “one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made.”
