The phrase “Eli Roth directs the film adaptation of Borderlands” is not one I thought I’d be hearing anytime, but I’m also not upset about that fact, either. The Splat Pack progeny of Quentin Tarantino and director of Cabin Fever and The Green Inferno was announced for the project around this time last year, though the film itself had reportedly been in production for as long as five years prior. The smash hit FPS/RPG hybrid has sold a reported 57 million units across its four titles, with the most recent Borderlands 3 releasing in the fall of 2019.
Previously, Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart were announced as stars in this adaptation, playing Siren class Lilith and Soldier class Roland respectively. Now, Jamie Lee Curtis, the original scream queen herself, has been tapped to play archaeologist Dr. Patricia Tannis. Players may remember Dr. Tannis as the voice of the hidden journal side missions in the original 2009 game, as well as a pivotal side character in games two and three.
In a statement, Eli Roth had this to say about Curtis’ involvement, first broken by Collider:
“Working with the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I am so excited for her to bring her humor, warmth and brilliance to the role of Tannis.”
No release date for the film has been announced at this time, but with a thus-far-announced cast like Blanchett, Hart, and now Curtis, it’s hard not to be excited about this adaptation, to be distributed by Lionsgate in the near future.
