Wes Craven's 1991 horror movie The People Under the Stairs is getting a remake just in time for its 30th anniversary, and Collider reports Get Out and Us filmmaker Jordan Peele has boarded the project as producer.
Peele will produce for Universal alongside Win Rosenfeld via their company Monkeypaw Productions.
Collider notes, "though Peele is not expected to direct the film himself, it remains unclear whether he and/or Rosenfeld will have a hand in writing the script, as they did in co-writing Candyman alongside director Nia DaCosta."
In the original film, after breaking into and becoming trapped inside a fortified home owned by a mysterious couple, a young boy and two thieves are suddenly thrust into a nightmare. They quickly learn the true nature of the house's homicidal inhabitants and the secret creatures hidden deep within the house.
Brandon Adams starred in the film alongside Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, A.J. Langer and Ving Rhames.
"People Under the Stairs represents, whether intentionally or not, a certain fear of what goes on behind closed doors in white homes," Peele told the Village Voice back in 2017. "And it also approaches the notion of enslavement of the people they’ve got hidden under the stairs."
Even if he only ends up producing the project and nothing more, Peele's proven mastery of socially driven horror is sure to make a positive impact on the remake. Stay tuned for more updates.
