KANGA Explores Anxiety Among Groups With Music Video For New Track "Home"

In just a couple of weeks, industrial pop powerhouse KANGA releases her second studio album You And I Will Never Die. In the build to this highly-anticipated release, her first LP on Artoffact Records, we’ve gotten two dreamy singles in “Godless” and “Moscow,” but for what may be the last sampling of the record, things take a decidedly darker, more EBM-oriented turn, on the anxiety-exploring “Home.”

As KANGA herself put it, in an interview with Flood, who premiered the Tyler Bradberry-directed video this past Tuesday:

“Many of us turn to self-medication to cope with our feelings of hopelessness and loss, and when faced with the pressures of social situations we feel an obligation to paint on a different face in order to get through the night. The video for ‘Home’ centers around this duality between the anxiety and the actor in the room: the split that happens when one’s internal monologue gains independence and creates a whole new character that is maybe braver than one’s inner self, but also lacks the boundaries and foresight our daylight selves hold onto. The video weaves the two selves in and out throughout the night. The masked figures that appear are projections of faceless anxieties that the uninhibited self is able to observe and immerse itself with, which may be exciting in the moment but will inevitably lead to a painful morning.”

Sonically speaking, “Home” has a trance feel to get lost in, with heavier electro leanings than a good handful of KANGA’s back catalog. The droning in C of the production provides a menacing backdrop for KANGA’s top-notch vocal production and delivery to skate across. Such a production allows for that anxiousness among others to bleed through, as the multiple layers of voices imitate the feeling of chatter and white noise at a house party or a crowded nightclub, neither of which many of us have experienced in the past year thanks to this era of Pandemia we live in.

I haven’t met a KANGA song I didn’t like, but “Home” might be one of my new favorites, and somehow got me even more excited for the upcoming album.
