Luca Guadagnino Discusses His 'Suspiria' Sequel That Likely Won't Happen

Back in 2018, filmmaker Luca Guadagnino graced us to his unique take on Dario Argento's classic 1977 film Suspiria, which was pretty equally both loathed and loved by fans of the original film, and ultimately ended up being a box office dud.

Not many know this, but Guadagnino's Suspiria (review) was originally titled Suspiria: Part 1, planned as the first part of a two-part story. Unfortunately, that second part is very unlikely to happen. In a chat with The Film Stage earlier this week, Guadagnino touched on his idea for the sequel's storyline.

"I loved making that movie. It's very dear to me," Guadagnino said of Suspiria. "But writer David Kajganich and I had really conceived it as the first half of a bigger story.

He continued, "Sequels are an attitude of the soul. You want to do things because you want to spend time with people that you love, the actors you love, the writers you love...with Suspiria, I can tell you that in part two, the storyline was layered in five different time zones and spaces. One of these was Helena Markos being a charlatan woman in the year 1200 in Scotland, and how she got the secret of longevity."

"[Suspiria] made absolutely nothing. It was a disaster at the box office," Guadagnino stated, adding that, "I know that people are liking it more and more now."

Basically, the demand for Guadagnino's Suspiria sequel sadly just isn't there, even though his take on the bewitching tale is very likely to go down in history as a polarizing cult classic.

In Suspiria, "A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up."
