When it comes to independent horror, one of the biggest forces in the game is the Mahal Empire, consisting of brothers Michael and Sonny. These Las Vegas-based producers have worked their magic on films such as Bus Party to Hell, Art of the Dead, and Attack of the Unknown, as well as upcoming films such as Bloodthirst. The bulk of their films are crowdfunded, with the producers’ lifetime total raised on Indiegogo recently breaking $1.5 million USD.
Part of this effort has gone towards their latest affair, the horror-Western hybrid Night of the Tommyknockers. The synopsis for this newest creation reads as such:
When miners blast for gold in 1856, they accidentally release ancient creatures known as Tommyknockers! The Town of Deer Creek, Nevada is soon under siege with only a handful of survivors held up in the local saloon. Things go from bad to worse when a gang of criminals on the run from a famous bounty hunter arrive in the town to rob the bank. Now everyone is trapped in a deadly battle against these blood-thirsty monsters, each other and their own greed in this ultimate Horror Western showdown.
The campaign broke its original goal of $100,000 inside of a week, and as of this printing, the total has reached nearly $175,000, with one week left. Perks for backing the project include digital copies of the film upon release, special thanks in the credits and on IMDb, VIP tickets to the red carpet premiere, and at higher levels, even custom speaking roles, your name on an in-movie wanted poster, and character naming privileges!
Filming is set to begin in January, with the film tentatively slated for 2021, along with two other Mahal Empire films, Bloodthirst and the Saw-inspired Death Count.
