Kronika… cut that shit out.
We’re finally within striking distance of the release of the long-awaited film reboot of Mortal Kombat, but it appears we will be waiting one more week before the beginning of kombat. April 23rd will see the release of Simon McQuoid’s adaptation of the beloved fighting game series. In a report from Variety, it was noted that the one-week pushback is to space out the blockbusters that are coming soon, as we approach the lauded summer blockbuster season.
It’s also worth mentioning that Godzilla vs. King Kong, Warner Bros. latest epic feature, has been lighting up the still-recovering box office, particularly in international markets. The film has earned $121 million internationally, with some $70 million coming from China in its opening weekend. As vaccination efforts are on the move domestically, it is hoped that the U.S. box office will continue to improve, as we appear to round the corner on this era of Pandemia.
It’s also worth mentioning the to-date numbers of HBO Max and WarnerMedia’s move to push the entire 2021 theatrical slate to the streaming service. It was reported by Variety that this would cost WarnerMedia an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue. Given the annual revenue gained from each individual customer, this would mean that HBO Max would need around 8.3 million new subscribers to break even.
With major blockbusters such as Denis Villenueve’s Dune and the fourth Matrix movie still to come, there’s plenty of time on the clock, but given we’re now a quarter of the way through 2021 (already?!), it’s worth knowing where we stand.
