New 'Evil Dead' Being Developed by 'The Hole in the Ground' Director Lee Cronin

New Evil Dead Lee Cronin

It was revealed last year that Sam Raimi was going to be handpicking a director for an upcoming Evil Dead film, and while Bruce Campbell may have retired his Ash Williams character, he's still involved in the franchise and has revealed some details on the film in a conversation with Empire this week.

Campbell has announced that Lee Cronin, who directed A24's The Hole in the Ground, has been selected by Raimi and the team behind the film to write and direct the new Evil Dead.

"It’s called Evil Dead Now," said Campbell. "Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole in the Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical."

He also revealed that Cronin's film will not focus on Ash, but instead centers on a new group of heroines. Presumably, the film won't have any connection to Fede Alvarez's 2013 film. Instead, it'll tell a brand new story within the Evil Dead universe.

"From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating," Campbell added. "You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue."

Cronin also director the "13 Steps to Hell" segment from Raimi's "50 States of Fright" series on Quibi.

Stay tuned for more details as they're revealed.
