'Overlord' Director Julius Avery to Helm New 'Van Helsing' Film for Universal, James Wan Producing

Following the success of Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man and with new takes on The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolfman, along with various other projects, recently announced to be in the works, Universal's monsters appear to be returning to life following the studio's failed "Dark Universe."

But the monsters won't be having all the fun, as Deadline lets us know today that the monster-slayer Van Helsing is also receiving a brand new film from Universal.

Overlord director Julius Avery will helm the project, with James Wan on board to produce through his Atomic Monster banner!

"Sources tell Deadline that Universal is developing an original horror/thriller inspired by the studio’s classic monster legacy set in the world of Van Helsing," the site reports.

"The logline for the script is being kept under wraps," Deadline adds.

Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Godzilla vs. Kong) wrote the original script, which Avery is rewriting.

Michael Clear will also produce and Judson Scott will serve as executive producer for Atomic Monster.

As we all know, Universal attempted to launch a Van Helsing franchise with the 2004 film that featured Hugh Jackman in the titular role, but the film underperformed at the box office and never ended up getting the franchise off the ground. The film has since gained somewhat of a cult following.

Regardless, we're excited to see what Avery can do with the character. Overlord was a pleasant surprise and certainly didn't skimp on the red stuff. Here's to hoping that same gritty and gruesome essence is translated into the world of Van Helsing.
