Earlier this year, it was announced that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmakers behind Ready or Not, would be directing a new Scream movie for Spyglass Media Group, and we recently learned that David Arquette would be reprising the role of Dewey Riley. It's now been reported that Paramount has teamed with Spyglass to release the film.
Variety reports that Paramount and Spyglass Media Group will co-produce the currently untitled Scream and release it in theaters sometime in 2021.
Plot details are currently under wraps, but Arquette's return as Dewey does confirm the film will be set in the same universe as Wes Craven's films. James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, “Castle Rock”) are co-writing the screenplay.
Arquette is the first officially confirmed cast member for the new film, with rumors of Neve Campbell being in early discussions about reprising Sidney Prescott currently circulating around the web. Conversations are also currently underway for other franchise cast members to return.
Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak producing for Spyglass. Franchise creator and the original film’s screenwriter Kevin Williamson will serve as executive producer. Chad Villella will also executive produce.
Principal photography will begin later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina when safety protocols are in place.
