If you’ve been in public school at any point in your life, odds are you have read at least one Shakespeare play. It’s perhaps even more likely that the play in question was Romeo and Juliet, the supposed greatest love story of all time that has a higher body count than The Strangers. That said, it’s been interesting to see how Hollywood has spun this sordid tale, from keeping it true to the original Middle Ages setting, to using garden gnomes by way of animation, and most impressively, against the backdrop of California, who I have on good authority knows how to party.
This episode of CryptTeaze Family Fun Night features Makenna Weyburne, our youngest guest on the show by far, as well as star of the Wizarding World fan film Mudblood. Her choice was the 1996 Baz Luhrmann adaptation of Shakespeare’s time-tested play, typeset as Romeo + Juliet.
The visionary director, who would later go on to direct such epics as Australia, Moulin Rouge, and The Great Gatsby, assembled an all-star cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the titular roles, as well as John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, and Paul Rudd. The dialogue is kept faithful to the original script, with the swords replaced by guns, and while the story itself may be off-putting for some, the grand scale that Luhrmann takes things to is definitely worth seeing.
As for this episode, it’s our first (and possibly only) PG-rated episode, so the drinking game (to be played with water, of course) this time around is to take a swig every time someone almost swears.
