Ryan Gosling to Star in 'The Wolfman' for Universal

Ryan Gosling The Wolfman Universal

Following the success of Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, Universal is now set to tackle yet another take on The Wolfman, and according to Variety, Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049, Drive) is set to star in and possibly produce the film, with the search for a director currently underway.

The film is based on an idea from Gosling himself, who will be working from a script by "Orange is the New Black" writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

While no directors have signed on for the film, Variety reports that Cory Finley ("Bad Education") is being considered to helm the project.

The site also notes that "it’s unknown what the new take on The Wolfman will look like," but the film is said to be set in present times and "in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler, with an obvious supernatural twist."

Being that Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler is one of the more unique and memorable thrillers released in the last decade, that certainly got our attention!

Universal's most recent attempt to revive the iconic monster was back in 2010 with Joe Johnson's gory take. That film featured Benicio Del Toro in the role of the titular character alongside Anthony Hopkins, and in my opinion, it was a damn fun watch!

After the Tom Cruise-starring Mummy film flopped, Universal decided to make the shift towards more filmmaker-driven projects based on the monsters' legacies rather than moving forward with the originally planned interconnected universe. If this year's Invisible Man is any indication, they're certainly on the right track.

There's nothing left to report at this time regarding the new Wolfman, but stay tuned for more updates!
