Serj Tankian's Activism Documentary 'Truth to Power' Gets New Trailer and February Release Date

System of a Down made headlines across the metal world when, after fifteen years without a peep from the band proper, the Armenian-American alt-metal institution released two new songs. “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” were released in conjunction with the band’s campaign for their ancestral homeland, in light of recent horrific events in Artsakh. As the grandson of a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, Tankian has devoted his life and career to fighting injustice, and his most recent project looks to highlight some of his activism.

Truth to Power is a documentary highlighting Tankian’s political commentary, both within his music and outside of it. Directed by Garin Hovannisian, the film premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and will hit video on demand on February 19th via Oscilloscope Laboratories. From the release of their sophomore album Toxicity to his solo work and beyond, the doc looks at not only Serj Tankian the artist, but Serj Tankian the activist, Serj the truth seeker, Serj the amplifier of voices which have been silenced for over a hundred years or more.

The film also features tracks from Serj’s newest solo EP Elasticity, due out in February, presumably near or on the documentary’s release date. It was reported back in December that the songs on this EP were those once intended for System of a Down, though recent events regarding stances on Black Lives Matter and other creative differences have kept the band apart for some time, recent single aside.
