There’s something to be said about the horrors of social media. Look no further than the very real, very plausible things that can compromise privacy and security, from the invasion of said privacy in things like the filter removal on the TikTok silhouette challenge, to the literal invasion in acts such as doxxing and swatting. As useful of a tool as social media can be in our daily lives, it can just as easily be the worst thing for our well-being.
Writer/director Jennifer Harrington (Housekeeping, Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two) looks to explore the concept of influencers in her new film Shook, set to release on Shudder on Thursday, February 18th. In it, makeup artist and influencer Mia (Daiyse Tutor) becomes the target of an online terror campaign. She gets calls on her phone, insisting that her friends and family are in danger, that all that she knows and loves is going to be taken from her. She is subjected to a series of tests and tough decisions that will have lasting consequences. But is this all a sick game? Or is there something more at work?
Co-starring in the film are Emily Goss (Snapshots), Nicola Posener (The Bold and the Beautiful), Octavius J. Johnson (Sleepless), Stephanie Simbari (Here and Now), Grant Rosenmeyer (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and real-life make-up and social media influencer Genelle Seldon. Johnny Jewel of Chromatics, Symmetry, and Glass Candy provided some of the music for the film.
