Back in February, we got our first look at writer/director Arseny Sukhin’s science-fiction horror movie The Superdeep (aka Kola Superdeep) in the form of an international trailer that caused quite a buzz within the horror community due to the film's likeness to John Carpenter's The Thing and one wince-inducing scene in particular.
Thankfully, Shudder seems to know a damn good horror movie when they see one and have made the move to acquire the film ahead of its world premiere at Sitges.
Variety reports that the movie was acquired by Shudder from Pulsar Content for North America, the U.K. and Australia/New Zealand in a deal overseen by XYZ Films.
"From the seed of a terrifying urban legend, the 'Superdeep' team has crafted an epic, thrilling creature feature that we can’t wait to unleash on Shudder members in 2021," said Emily Gotto, Shudder’s head of global acquisitions.
The film is based on the real-life "Kola Superdeep Borehole," the deepest vertical borehole in the world (40,230 ft). An urban legend claims that the project was stopped because scientists drilled so deep that they reached Hell.
The official synopsis goes something like this: "The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the most large-scale secret object of the country. In 1984, inexplicable sounds like the screams of many voices were recorded at a depth of more than 12 kilometers. In the wake of these events, the object was closed. A small research team went down below the surface to find out what secret the world’s deepest borehole was hiding. What they have found turned out to be the greatest threat in history. And the future of humanity is in their hands."
Milena Radulovic (The Balkan Line), Maksim Radugin and Nikita Duvbanov star.
