The Warner Company’s streaming service HBO Max saw its debut this past summer, with a host of content available on launch, including libraries from Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and the extensive HBO back catalog of television series and documentaries. Recently, the service has announced that the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 will hit the streaming service on Christmas Day, in addition to the traditional theatrical release, only HBO Max will host the film at no additional charge to current subscribers. This move is set to change the face of the film industry, for better or for worse.
Another film to get this treatment is the long-awaited Mortal Kombat, as it will hit both theaters and HBO Max on April 16, 2021. This is three months behind the originally-announced date of January 15, 2021, as Warner Bros. have shifted much of their 2021 release schedule around, including another comically violent IP, Tom and Jerry.
This new adaptation is directed by Simon McQuoid, in his feature-length film directorial debut. Greg Russo and Dave Callaham wrote the screenplay, with the story done by Russo and Oren Uziel. Among the producers are Todd Garner and James Wan, the director of the first installment of the Saw franchise.
In light of this news, producer Todd Garner also provided us with the first official poster for the film, bearing the updated MK dragon logo we all know and love. He also promised a trailer sometime after the first of the year, well ahead of that April release. This new release date comes just one week shy of the two-year anniversary of the initial launch of Mortal Kombat 11, which has since seen Aftermath and Ultimate expansions, with the potential for even more on the way.
Check out the poster below, and prepare for kombat this spring, whether in the theater or at home!
