"The Science of Scare" Infographic Compiles Heart Rates to Determine the Ultimate Horror Movie

Just yesterday, we shared with you an "Ultimate Guide to Horror Movies" infographic created by HalloweenCostumes.com, which highlighted some of the greatest horror films that have helped shape the genre over the last 100+ years, and today we've happened across another fun Halloween season infographic created by the UK-based site Broadband Choices.

Dubbed "The Science of Scare," the infographic is based on a scientific study that tracked heart rates throughout some of the world's most iconic horror films to find the ultimate "king of fright night."

The site explains, "Is there anything better than a night in with the lights off and a truly terrifying movie that gets your heart pounding? We don't think so. That's why we've explored the science of scare, with our experiment to categorically find the scariest films for your scary movie night. Our team studied critic's lists and Reddit recommendations to curate 50 of the best horror films ever made, before subjecting them to our test subjects."

"Watching each movie in 5.1 surround sound, our panel of 50 people consumed over 120 hours of the best horror movies, each fitted with a heart rate monitor to measure which movies got their blood pumping the most to find the ultimate horror movie and crown the king of fright night."

According to the study, Scott Derrickson’s 2012 film Sinister is the undisputed scariest horror film of all time, followed closely by Insidious, The Conjuring, Hereditary and Paranormal Activity, with It Follows, The Conjuring 2, The Babadook, The Descent and The Visit rounding out the top ten.

Insidious, Sinister, The Exorcist III, The Conjusting and The Descent, in that order, claimed the biggest jump scares by heart rate.

The infographic also includes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 28 Days Later, A Quiet Place, Hush, The Exorcist, Alien, The Thing, Audition, Scream, and The Witch, among others.

Personally, I would love to have known the test group's age range, if the group was comprised of avid horror fans or casual viewers, and if they'd ever previously seen the films in question, but beggars can't be choosers, and this is still a pretty interesting study nonetheless. I also can't complain with the movie selection. These truly are some of the best and scariest horror films of all time.
