Fortune, fame, mirror vain, gone insane, but the memory remains…
As the last chapter of The Last Ride, the WWE Network docu-series about The Undertaker, drops today, the man behind The Phenom has announced that he is finished with his in-ring career. After thirty years, an event-defining WrestleMania undefeated streak, and seven WWE world championships, the final bell has tolled for The Deadman.
The fifth installment of the series highlights what would be Undertaker’s final match, the cinematic Boneyard Match versus “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. Filmed on location, and featuring Undertaker entering to Metallica’s “Now That We’re Dead” while riding a motorcycle, “The American Badass” defeated the former WWE and TNA World Champion in a match that could only really work in times like these. On the match, The Undertaker expresses his feelings, admitting that the Boneyard Match was a match he could proudly call his last.
Though retirement rumors have swirled around The Undertaker for over a decade now, even as recent as three years ago at WrestleMania 33, the fact that WWE themselves have kicked up the #ThankYouTaker hashtag once again lends to the idea that the announcement may stick this time around. That being said, the real-life Mark Calaway is under contract with WWE for several more years, and himself said:
“If Vince [McMahon] was in a pinch, would I come back? I guess time would only tell there. In case of emergency, break glass, you pull out The Undertaker. I would consider it.”
Hopefully, if The Undertaker is ever brought back in such an emergency, his then-final match is better than the god-awful Goldberg match in Saudi Arabia.
