As we draw closer to November 20th and the release of Under Sullen Skies, Brooklyn-based black metal bastions Tombs have given us another taste of the forthcoming release. Earlier this month we got “Barren,” and if that wasn’t enough to tide you over, we now have a world-ending monster of a track, this one known as “Bone Furnace.”
The song starts off with an epic moment of octave chords, before cascading into blast beats and other assorted black metal madness. By the time we get to the verse just past the one minute mark, things come to a four on the floor groove, with mid-scream vocals and a brutal-sounding main riff. The meat of the song is a bit more straightforward death or melodeath than some of their other work, with the track being bookended by blast beat chaos.
Vocalist/guitarist Mike Hill also offers us an explanation behind the name for the new album:
“The album’s title came during all this and the sort of post-apocalyptic world we’re living in,” Hill explains. “It encapsulates an overall feeling of gloom and depression which is pretty much how we’ve been living for most of this year. The title was the last piece to fall into place. I remember standing on the roof of the building I was living in at the time on a grey day and it was raining – actually, it wasn’t even raining; it was a half-assed attempt at rain! – and depressing and I just thought, ‘What a sullen sky’ and it just stuck with me.”
